JOSEPH ATWOOD (1749 – 1833), son of Joshua Atwood and Mary Knowles

SUSANNA SMITH (d. 1838), daughter of Archelaus Smith and Elizabeth Nickerson


Joseph Atwood was born in 1749 [1], probably in Chatham, Barnstable, Massachusetts. He died on 20 September 1833 in Barrington, Shelburne county, Nova Scotia. [2] He married Susanna Smith on 10 August 1767 in Barrington. [2] Joseph and Susanna are buried in the Barrington River cemetery in Barrington. [3]

Susanna, the daughter of Archelaus, died in 1838 in Barrington. [2]

Joseph Atwood bought a share and a half of land in the First Division, No. 36, for 25 pounds on 13 March 1771. Joseph Atwood, fisherman, sold No. 36 to Thomas Doane, gentleman, for three pounds current money on 20 October 1777. The deed was also signed by Susanna Atwood. [4, 179]

i. Bathsheba Atwood was born on 7 January 1768. She married Abram, the son of Jonathan and Jane (Hamilton) Smith [4, 566–7] on 19 October 1783 [2].

ii. Elizabeth ("Betty") Atwood (twin) was born on 22 June 1770. She married Thomas Doane, Jr. in 1786. [4, 477] Thomas was the son of Thomas and Letitia (Eldridge) Doane. [9]

iii. Tamsin Atwood (twin) was born on 22 June 1770. She died on 19 May 1848. She married Abner Curtis.

iv. Susanna Atwood was born on 23 September 1773. She married Jacob Spinney.

v. Ruth Atwood was born on 10 October 1775. She married Lumbard Nickerson, the son of Gideon Nickerson. [4, 525–8]

vi. Molly Atwood was born on 4 August 1777. She married Benjamin Roberts.

vii. Joshua Atwood was born on 4 July 1779. He married Catherine Ellis.

viii. Lettice Atwood was born on 23 July 1781. She married John Kendrick. John, the son of Warren Anson and Azubah (Sears) Kendrick, was born in 1776. [4, 502–3]

ix. Hannah Atwood was born on 8 June 1783. She married first Isaiah Nickerson in 1800. [4, 525–8] Isaiah was the son of Abner and Elizabeth (Baker) Nickerson. [4, 525–8] She married second his brother Aaron Nickerson. [4, 525–8]

x. Mercy Atwood was born on 29 March 1785. She died on 15 October 1863. [3] She married John Spinney. [4, 579] John, the son of John and Susan (Snow) Spinney, was born in 1784. [4, 579] He died on 9 March 1879, age 90 years and seven months. [3] Mercy and John are buried together in the Old Salem Chapel cemetery in Port La Tour, Shelburne county. [3]

xi. Temperance Atwood was born on 30 May 1787. She died on 14 May 1788.

xi. Joseph Atwood was born on 23 June 1789. He married Deborah Spinney, the daughter of John and Susan (Snow) Spinney. [4, 579].

xii. John Atwood was born on 12 June 1791.

xiii. Temperance Atwood was born on 25 March 1794. She died on 18 May 1854. [4, 454, 461] She married Daniel Crowell in 1813. [4, 454, 461] Daniel was the son of Eleazer Crowell and the grandson of Jonathan Crowell and Anna Nickerson. [4, 454, 461] Daniel died on 30 November 1876, age 87 years and two months. [3] Temperance and Daniel are buried in the Atwood's Brook cemetery in Atwood's Brook, Shelburne county. [3]

xiv. Stephen Knowles Atwood was born on 8 October 1795. He married Sarah Hopkins. Sarah, the daughter of Elisha and Bethiah (Wilson) Hopkins, was born in 1797. [4, 497]

xv. Bethiah Atwood was born on 15 April 1798. She married John Sweeney.

xvi. Willard Atwood was born on 13 March 1800. He died in 1872. [3] He married Mercy Nickerson, the daughter of Moses and Susanna (Kenney) Nickerson. [4, 452] Mercy was born in 1808 and died in 1877. [3] Willard and Mercy are buried together in the Old Salem cemetery. [3]
